🎮 Dreams of Another Review
A philosophical journey through creation, destruction, and self-reflection
By: Ahmad Yaqoub
Introduction:
When it comes to video games as an art form, few titles transcend pure entertainment to explore philosophy and existence.
Dreams of Another, the latest creation by multimedia artist Baiyon (known for PixelJunk Eden),
is not just a game—it’s a visually stunning, emotionally resonant experience that raises deep questions about life, death, legacy, and the purpose of creation.
It is a dreamlike game world that constantly reshapes itself through the act of destruction—rather than construction.

A Story Begins with Fear and Self-Discovery:
The game opens with a Wandering Soldier in an unknown war, carrying a single, unusable bullet.
When attacked, he hides instead of fighting. Discovered by the enemy, he cannot bring himself to fire,
marking the pivotal moment that triggers the dream world of Dreams of Another.
The story then shifts to The Man in Pajamas, who discovers the soldier’s discarded gun—this time with unlimited ammo.
The gun isn’t used for killing but to reshape the fragmented dream world. By destroying the fog, people regain their form,
landscapes solidify, and “lifeless” objects communicate insights to the player. Approximately 200 interactive objects
provide unique philosophical perspectives, contributing to the larger narrative.

“Destruction as Creation” Mechanic:
The core mechanic in Dreams of Another is unconventional: players fire a weapon not to destroy, but to create.
The environment consists of circular fragments; shooting them coalesces them into meaningful objects,
whether walls, people, or abstract ideas.
Shooting to reshape the dream world
Deep Symbolism:
Everything in this dream world holds meaning. Each character, object, and sound carries a message.
The Man in Pajamas encounters the Soldier as a ghost, receiving upgrades and weapon enhancements,
and experiencing the philosophical reflections of the world around him.
Interacting with approximately 200 objects offers glimpses into a distorted reality, exploring themes such as existence, loss, sacrifice, and isolation.
The game does not provide answers but encourages players to reflect and discover meaning on their own.
Gameplay Style: Simple yet Profound
Despite its philosophical depth, gameplay is relatively simple. Each section is short, and failure only returns you to the start without heavy penalties.
Light RPG elements, like weapon upgrades and faster movement, enhance exploration but do not dominate the experience.
The game rewards thorough exploration and interaction. The main objective is sometimes achievable by simply walking to a marker,
but full narrative richness comes from engaging with all objects and dialogues. The New Game Plus feature allows revisiting previously explored areas for a fresh perspective.

PS VR2 Support:
The game also supports PlayStation VR2. While VR doesn’t change the core gameplay,
it immerses the player fully in the dream world. Experiencing it in VR provides a sensory perspective impossible to capture on a flat screen.
Conclusion: Should You Play Dreams of Another?
If you seek fast-paced action or straightforward storytelling, this is not the game for you.
Dreams of Another is for players willing to pause, reflect, and explore life from a different angle.
It’s a philosophical and artistic journey that lingers long after the game ends.
Not just a game, but a broken mirror reflecting your soul across every fragment.
